RSS..Really Simple for Students 4-B-2

As an elementary teacher, I had trouble thinking of ways that RSS could help my students. After giving it some time and thinking of the curriculum, I think RSS feeds would work best in Science because it is an area of study that is constantly changing. For example, I could sign up for NASA RSS feeds when we study space, which would help deliver the latest information to the students. Our textbook still has Pluto as a planet.
RSS feeds would work for communication between parents and teachers. Parents could subscribe to the teacher’s blog and possibly Board of Education’s webpage to have the latest information. This would help for something as simple as homework or field trips, but as important as school delays and closings. I found an article that explains superintendent’s uses of blogs. Teachers are always crunched for time, and RSS allows them to get the latest news from their favorite sites without having to check them individually. RSS also encourages collaboration and sharing-something that is too infrequent.
Personally, I plan to use RSS feeds to conserve time. I complain that I don’t have enough time, but RSS feeds will help me work smarter, not harder. And isn’t that the whole point?

    Hi Sherry,

I really liked the idea that you have for RSS and your second graders. Poor Pluto. I was sad when they took him out! : ) There is a place for all that we are learning, don’t you think? I think you are totally correct that RSS can save us time. I like anything that will help me work smarter!! See you.

Hi Sherry - I agree with you that the use of RSS with elementary students may be limited, but uses as teachers and parents are wide open. Whenever we can save a minute and keep up with the latest information, that’s a good thing. Nice blog!

I agree. But if there are some student information resources that support RSS feeds, then there might be a way for them to use it. And I do feel really bad for Pluto. It spent so many years believing that it was a planet only to be told that it was not.

Here is a little song that sums up my feelings:

Sherry - Creating a blog for the parents is a wonderful idea! And a time saver, too! Links could be included to give further information about CHARACTER EDUCATION !

    Thanks for inspiration!
